Rakuten Mobile along with Rakuten Symphony took home “The Operator Award” at the FutureNet World Awards 2022, for exemplary display of successful automation deployment in the industry, edging out a fiercely competitive shortlist of global telco leaders. The award is the latest industry recognition to be received by Rakuten for its paradigm-shifting software-first approach to building mobile networks.

Recognizing outstanding automation & AI innovation that changes the way future networks function and operate, this year’s FutureNet World event was held in-person, in London on May 10, 2022.

Unlocking hyperscale through Symworld

Key to Rakuten Mobile’s successful deployment in Japan has been the technologies that have gone into Rakuten Symphony’s Symworld, a platform that brings together everything that modern communications service providers need to plan, build and operate advanced, secure, high quality networks.

“Rakuten Symphony is in the business of acceleration. The telco industry no longer questions the need to change but hasn’t fully figured out how to scale and accelerate change yet. This is what we are bringing to the industry, having achieved our deployment targets four years ahead of schedule with Rakuten Mobile.”
- Geoff Hollingworth, CMO, Rakuten Symphony

These technologies have enabled Rakuten Mobile, Japan’s fourth major mobile operator, to deploy its network about four years ahead of schedule, reducing OPEX by up to 30%.

One of the best examples of Rakuten Symphony’s use of automation can be found in Symworld’s unique automation library. The automation library is fully programmable and includes a rich toolkit, which can be leveraged to develop complex automation flows in a matter of hours and with a few lines of code – a stark contrast to the months of coding from software engineers that the task would otherwise take.

“Rakuten Symphony is in the business of acceleration. The telco industry no longer questions the need to change but hasn’t fully figured out how to scale and accelerate change yet. This is what we are bringing to the industry, having achieved our deployment targets four years ahead of schedule with Rakuten Mobile,” said Rakuten Symphony CMO Geoff Hollingworth.

Below are some additional examples of how automation has helped Rakuten Mobile achieve unprecedented levels of operational efficiency.

  1. Cell site commissioning: 4 minutes (Rakuten Mobile 5G) vs. Weeks (Traditional operators)
  2. Engineer: subscriber ratio: 1:20,000 (Rakuten Mobile) vs. approximately 1:1000 (Traditional operators)
  3. Mobile service provisioning: 3 minutes (Rakuten Mobile) vs. 3 hours (Traditional Operations)

With Rakuten’s bold approach to building networks continuing to capture industry interest and recognition, it is clear that cloud-native, automated networks are both the future and the present of telecom.
