The transformation of the modern enterprise powered by the convergence of cloud computing, real-time communications (RTC), and the Internet of Things (IoT) was the key topic of discussion between Oracle’s GVP of Technology Andrew De La Torre, and Rakuten Symphony’s SVP and Global Head of Telco Cloud Vivek Chadha at this year’s Digital Transformation World (DTW) 2024. The leaders explored the evolving landscape of connectivity and its impact on enterprises, in a brief conversation moderated by Abe Nejad, Publisher of The Network Media Group.

"Adopting real-time communications into the operational technology solution of enterprises is both inevitable and transformational."
-Andrew De La Torre, GVP of Technology, Oracle
“The value will shift back to the CSPs if they can make it easy, seamless, and commoditized for enterprises to consume private network capabilities.”
- Vivek Chadha, SVP and Global Head of Telco Cloud, Rakuten Symphony

Unlike traditional IoT implementations that focus on augmenting back-office functions, integrating real-time communications (RTC) into operational technologies (OT) meets some of today’s most critical needs. This integration elevates service providers to the top of the value chain, offering significant opportunities beyond basic connectivity, enabling them to capitalize on both human-centric and industrial use cases.

For instance, large financial institutions already run complex communications networks like tier-two telcos to support their operations. However, as enterprises transform, they may struggle to manage the complexities of telecommunications. Rakuten Symphony’s advanced stacks simplify this process, enabling seamless adoption of these capabilities and accelerating the integration of communication solutions. Simplifying the consumption of private network capabilities and RTC can shift value back to communication service providers (CSPs). Making these advanced capabilities accessible and easy to use is crucial.

The discussion also highlighted how these technologies – cloud, RTC and IoT – tend to converge around data. IoT provides digital access to the physical world, while RTC offers real-time awareness. The cloud acts as the convergence point, enabling sophisticated services such as AI-powered analytics. This integration allows enterprises to perform advanced tasks with their data, significantly improving business operations. Validating the transformative potential of these technologies requires demonstrating tangible use cases to achieve critical mass adoption. To enable this, the industry must also bridge the skill gaps between communications and industry specialists.

As enterprises continue to evolve, integration between the spheres of cloud, RTC, and IoT will become increasingly critical considerations for CSPs. For more insights on the growing relevance of these technologies and how they are reshaping the modern enterprise, visit our home page.
