Chris Alvis, VP of Internet Services, sits down with us as he talks about his long-standing love for telecom, his passion for composing House electronic music and more.
Can you tell us about your journey to Rakuten Symphony?
Telecommunications has always been my passion. I studied Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Victoria University in Melbourne, and my career began with Telstra in 1998 as a coder, working on services like White Pages and Yellow Pages. Over the years, I gained extensive experience in software engineering, performance optimization, and network technologies, taking on roles at Optus, major Australian banks, and the National Broadband Network (NBN).
While consulting provided me with valuable experience, by 2015, I found myself looking for something more—something I could build and be a part of for the long term. My wife encouraged me to explore opportunities abroad, and though Japan wasn’t initially on my radar, the chance to work at Rakuten intrigued me. The company's diverse ecosystem spanning e-commerce, fintech, and telecom was unlike anything I had seen before, and I knew it was an opportunity to grow both personally and professionally.
I joined Rakuten in December 2016 as an Engineering Manager in the tech division, responsible for engineering and quality assurance for API services. Over time, my role expanded, and I took on more strategic responsibilities, leading key projects that would shape the future of our telecom products. These experiences not only honed my leadership skills but also deepened my understanding of the telecom industry, setting the foundation for my next major endeavor—Rakuten Link.
How did Rakuten Link come to life?
Rakuten Link began as part of the One App strategy, which aimed to consolidate multiple functionalities—mini-apps, official accounts, and communication features—into a single platform. The vision was ambitious, and the journey was filled with challenges. Our team faced the complex task of defining a robust technical architecture, crafting an intuitive and engaging user experience, and formulating a sustainable business strategy to ensure long-term success.
Initially, it was just a small team working to bring this idea to life. Our shared belief in the vision of Rakuten Link fueled our determination and hard work. By June 2020, we launched the Android version, followed by iOS in January 2021. Seeing Rakuten Link go from just a concept to a product used by millions was incredibly rewarding. The platform transformed how Rakuten Mobile customers communicate, offering free calls and messaging, and how they engage with our vast ecosystem in Rakuten.
Beyond Rakuten Link, I expanded my work to include Rakuten Drive, Send Anywhere, Rakuten NEO, and Rakuten Maritime. Each product brought its own set of challenges, requiring unique solutions and innovative approaches. However, the common goal was to ensure that our technology and product strategies evolved alongside the company’s larger ambitions. Fostering collaboration across teams and embracing a culture of continuous innovation became the cornerstone of our success.
What does your role as Vice President of Internet Services entail?
Today, as Vice President of Internet Services, my primary focus is on product development, engineering execution, and business growth. I work closely with our president and other senior leaders to ensure that our technology and product strategies align with the company's broader vision and continue to evolve in response to industry trends and customer needs.
Currently, my role extends beyond technology and strategy—it’s also about leadership. Leadership, to me, is more than making strategic calls—it’s about fostering an environment where teams can thrive. One of the most fulfilling aspects of my role is mentorship. I believe in guiding teams, empowering individuals, and ensuring that each person in the organization has the tools and confidence to contribute meaningfully. My leadership philosophy centers on fostering a collaborative environment where everyone feels valued and motivated to excel.Whether it’s through technical discussions, strategic planning, or one-on-one mentoring, I strive to be a leader who makes a lasting and tangible impact on the people around me.
What does a typical day look like for you?
Each day presents new opportunities, and no two days are exactly alike. My mornings typically begin with reviewing updates from various teams and catching up on ongoing projects. Once I settle into the office, I dive into meetings with product teams, strategic discussions with leadership, and brainstorming sessions focused on innovation and improvement.
Problem-solving plays a big role in my daily work. Whether it’s tackling technical challenges, improving operational efficiency, or identifying ways to enhance our product offerings, I enjoy working through complex issues and finding effective solutions. One of the most rewarding aspects of my role is the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams, ensuring that we continue to evolve and deliver high-quality services.
What inspires you in your work and personal life?
I am inspired by the ability to create change. Seeing the impact of the products I help build, witnessing the teams I mentor grow, and knowing that the work I do contributes to something larger than myself is what keeps me motivated. My goal is to be a leader who instills trust and confidence, someone my team can turn to for guidance and support.
Outside of work, my biggest inspiration is my family. I make it a priority to spend as much time as possible with my daughters, encouraging them to explore new opportunities and develop independence.
Beyond family, I have a deep love for music and cars. I’ve been composing House electronic music for years, alongside drum & bass. Driving, too, is a passion—not just as a means of transport, but as a way to clear my mind and disconnect. Whether it’s taking long drives or experimenting with music, these activities help me stay balanced and energized.
What advice would you give to new joiners at Rakuten Symphony?
If there’s one piece of advice I’d give to new team members, it’s to be proactive and curious. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, even if they seem basic—engagement and curiosity are what drive growth. Challenge the status quo, think critically, and don’t shy away from proposing new ideas. True innovation doesn’t come from a single person at the top; it’s fueled by individuals at every level who are willing to push boundaries and rethink what’s possible.
At Rakuten Symphony, we are constantly evolving, and the best way to succeed here is to embrace change, be adaptable, and take initiative. My journey at Rakuten has been one of constant learning, and growth, and I look forward to pushing boundaries and achieving new milestones alongside an incredible team.
